3 Common Misconceptions About Growing Your Business's Social Media

As a business, we want everyone to follow us on social media, but is that really the best tactic? Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to social media growth.

Plus, wouldn’t you rather spend your energy on attracting the right followers? This is especially true for a local business. Here are some of the biggest misconceptions about growing your social media.

I Want Unlimited Warm Leads!

The Big Giant

As a business professional, you most likely research social media trends. You may come across an article about a similar business boasting extraordinary social media analytics and how they achieved those numbers.

However, that doesn’t mean their strategies or their goals are aligned with yours. Many social media articles you read are based on brands with national or global growth and that may not be realistic for your business at this point in time.

For instance, if you have a small local business that’s just two years old, this isn’t appropriate for the growth of your business. Try doing sponsored ad over a really great piece of content you’ve created; that will help you achieve qualified leads you need rather than followers uninterested in your business.

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers

Your social media followers should be invested in your brand or interested your products/services. Many businesses, however, want their followers or likes to be high, but don’t understand why their impression are low.

Chances are many of your followers don’t care about what you’re offering; therefore, they just bypass your content. Try to focus on leads that want to invest in your product or service. You will see higher interactions.

Stealing Followers on Instagram

It has become a trend for local businesses to go to other businesses and follow the same people. SUCH A BIG NO-NO! Your customers will start to notice, trust me. It is a weekly conversion here at ROI all ending in annoyance. I hate to say it, but this has become bad in the boutique and restaurant realm. Try showing unique clothes or cocktails for a restaurant; these things tend to draw people in because they will want an experience that is unique to them.

Moral of the story:

  1. Don’t believe every article you see about social media growth applies to your business,

  2. Experiment with how you should grow your social media.

  3. Don’t steal followers.

With social media, you must be patient and you must be ethical. People will come to you if you provide them with content they actually want, when they want it.
