5 Ways to Beat the Afternoon Slump at Work

The dreaded afternoon slump. Once the clock strikes three, your energy begins to wane, your concentration starts to slip, your eyelids become heavy and any motivation you had leftover from that successful a.m. meeting has long since passed. If you haven’t experienced this inextricable lethargy, then you simply aren’t human.

To get your work done, you must focus. Your first thought for a pick-me-up is probably caffeine, but sadly, Starbizzle doesn’t always cut it. Since calling it a day probably isn’t an option, here are 5 surefire ways to give yourself a boost once the afternoon doldrums start to set in.

  1. Drink some water

You know how every fitness and health expert says to drink eight glasses of water a day? While that number is debatable, this fact isn’t: When you are dehydrated, you can become sluggish and fatigued. If you want your body and brain to make it through the final countdown, then bottom’s up! For those of you who don’t like water, infuse it with cucumber or lemon, or add a flavor mix like Mio.

  2. Go for a stroll

Sitting at a desk and staring at a computer screen all day is going to make you tired. Fight the haze by going for brisk walk around the block. You don’t even have to put on your workout gear. Walking can give you an energy boost and lower your stress levels. Take a break from the grind, soak up the sun and reduce your blood pressure at the same time. Grab a colleague for a chat or go solo to reflect. If it’s a bit too nippy out, try some “deskercises” or yoga.

  3. Take a power nap

If you need a siesta on the job, don’t try and hide it. Just tell your boss you need to recharge your batteries for 15 or 20 minutes. You are of no use at work if you are tired and cranky so you met as well get a few zzz’s in, right?

  4. Grab a snack — a healthy one

In other words, “PUT DOWN THE CHEEZE-ITS.” We know it's hard to resist the temptation of junk food, but try and look for foods with staying power, like a sliced banana with peanut butter, whole grain crackers with hummus, almonds or a protein bar. If you indulge in both, we certainly aren't ones to judge.

  5. Have some caffeine

Yea, yea, we know we said caffeine doesn’t always do the trick, but it doesn’t hurt to try. Rather than a strong cup of Joe or sugary soda, opt for a soothing green or herbal tea.
