7 Ways To Add Personality To Your Blogs

A blog without personality is like a low-sodium Saltine cracker — technically food, but why bother?

Personality is the spice of the written word and blogs are no exception.

7 Tips For Making Your Blog Stand Out

Anecdotes: Everyone loves a good story. Add interest to your blog with a relevant anecdote that helps illustrate a concept.

First Person: Writing in the first person (I, me, we) can lend your writing a touch of intimacy readers crave.

Humor: Enjoy a good laugh? You’re not alone! Make readers laugh and they’ll come back for more.

Word Choice: Whether its regional verbiage, mainstream slang, or unique adages, word choice can make all the difference between bland and stimulating copy.

Illustrations: I’m referring to pictures and graphics, here — more specifically, intriguing, quality imagery that will grab readers’ attention.

Emotion: Passionate writing is interesting writing. Express your opinion! Get excited! Show your teeth! But whatever your feelings, don’t be wishy-washy.

Description: Intricate descriptions cultivate reader interest. Example: Use “diamond-encrusted band of gold” in place of the word “ring.”

Treat These 3 Things Like The Plague

Stop — and I mean STOP — these habits:

Talking above, or below, your audience: Using over-complicated jargon can turn off readers, but the opposite can, too. Speak to your readers on their level.

Incorporating trite verbiage: Overused words and phrases lose all meaning. This can mean different things depending on your industry (e.g. cutting-edge or state-of-the-art).

Using passive voice: For the love of sweet, baby Jesus, use active voice!

Though this is not an exhaustive list of do’s and don’ts, it should send you on the proper course toward engaging content.
